Over 1,000 gloves, fiber optics, LED lights
Description:
Inspired by the art objects of surrealist Meret Oppenheim and the soft sculptures of Yayoi Kusama, the Hands Down suit transforms everyday objects— via texture, repetition and scale— into an extraordinary wearable sculpture.
Constructed with gloves and lights, Hands Down reminds us that to float above the real, all we have to do is de-familiarize our way of seeing.
In the spring of 2011, Alfalfa Studio was one of the six New York studios invited to be part of a runway show of illuminated designs as part of the AIGA Awards ceremony. “Bright Lights: The AIGA Awards” is an annual celebration to honor those whose exemplary work inspires and defines the design profession.
The task was simple: make the evening dynamic and spectacular by creating an original piece using lights.
During the runway show, guests voted on the designs via the “Bright Lights” app. By popular vote Hands Down was the winner of the night.
Hands Down, was made with more than 1,000 gloves in various materials combined with LED lighting and fiber optics.
Our elegant 6-foot-three model Daria rocked the runway in such a way that even Lady Gaga would be jealous.
