Are you like me and the Australian born artist Sophie Blackall one of those New Yorkers who often forget to take something to read on the subway? By creating this handmade portraits Sophie gave us something to stare at and to think about. In fact, If you take the NYC subway, you might already have came across her work. When Sophie rides the subway she always draws the people around her —sometimes with a pencil, sometimes just in her head— she draws people who are sleeping, reading, listening to music or talking to each other.

Sophie: “I glean all my characters from my fellow passengers. Many things I find on the train attract me: subtle interactions, eccentricity, beauty, sorrow, secrets, kindness, generosity, excellent hairdos.”

I personally love the way the people are leaning against each other and the fact that she actually integrated her illustration in the illustration itself. Next time you are in the subway, let’s try to see if she put an even tinier third illustration into the second one too…
