My greatest extravagance? Books, hands down. All types of books, too—novels, memoirs, magazines, design books, science related books, museum catalogs, poetry, what have you… And every now and then I have a tantalizing impulse to buy myself a picture book.

These are two of my latest purchases, both with gorgeous illustrations of animals. The first is a pretty recent book, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, written by Philip C. Stead and illustrated by Erin E. Stead. The illustrations are beautifully delicate, subtle, and sophisticated, which appeal not only to children but to adults as well.

A middle aged lady picked up the book when she saw me skimming through it at the bookstore. I asked her, “Is it for your kid?” and she shook her head. “It’s for myself–to brighten up my dull bookshelf at home.”

The colored areas have a marvelous grainy texture made by Erin’s technique of woodblock printing. Check out her process here!

The next book I purchased was Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, which is a classic, but I bought it mainly for Justin Todd’s terrific illustrations. I previously owned this book once upon a time, but lost it during a big move. I’ve missed it ever since.

Of the many illustrated versions of this story, Todd’s is my favorite. I was lucky enough to find a used one for a very cheap price and I bought it on the spot.

I’m so happy to see my old friends again–Mr. Toad, Mole, and Ratty.
