Over one month-and-a-half ago, Alfalfa New York’s new partner Minal Nairi created an Instagram account for the company. Minal urged me to get on Instagram. “It’s fun, you are going to love it,” she said.

That prompted me to join the more than 100 million people taking pictures worldwide. According to Wikipedia by May of 2012, 58 photos were being uploaded every second. The total number of photos uploaded (since inception) is more than one billion.

In case you are not familiar with how the photo-sharing program works, I’ll briefly explain the basics:

  • First, you either take or select a photo, a set of three icons appears beneath the image.
  • There are the 17 famed Instagram filters, which add different pre-determined ‘look’ to your photos, and give the effect that you’ve altered or professionally edited them.
  • Once your photo is ready to go, click the green checkmark. This brings you to the social sharing screen.
  • Before publishing it, if you wish, add a caption explaining what you’ve photographed, an anecdote, or really anything your social networks a.k.a. followers would enjoy.

I must confess Minal was right, I’m hooked in Instagram. I just reached my first 100 pictures! For me, it’s interesting to see which photos are the most popular among the community. Out of every 100 pictures, I intend to share the 7 most well-liked photos from now on. Stay tuned.
