How do you get to know someone? And how do you get someone to know you? Moreover, how do you make this process interesting? Resumes, social networking, photos, interviews, cooking classes… Many designers create self promotional projects that portray their interests and capabilities. These projects are greatly encouraged and appreciated, because they not only depict a character, but show that the designer is really living what he/she loves. Those who don’t enjoy their profession, but rather, does it only for the money, do not have a reason (or motivation) to generate extra work of promoting themselves. As Mother Teresa once said, The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.

This self promo piece I’m sharing today definitely shows devotion to design. Beautifully illustrated and packaged by my very good friend, Brooklyn based designer, Polina Sapershteyn, this complete set includes a brochure of her work, a business card, and a colorful memory card game. The deck of cards display Polina’s interests (a few of which I know are obsessions), in an intricate and exotic style that seems almost mystical. It’s fun to explore what objects and images are used to represent each interest—for example, observing the brushes, colored pencils, and X-acto knife on the “Design” card, you can tell that this designer values crafts. Hand skills, too—the typography for each and every one of these memory cards were hand lettered. Which is one of the things that make this self promo unique and memorable.
