Cats come and go without ever leaving. ~Martha Curtis

Many years ago while reading Pablo Neruda, I found a poem titled Cat’s Dream; later, in the 90s, I stumbled on a touching piece of poetry called Cat in an Empty Apartment by Wyslava Szymborska; Doris Lessing documented her fascination with cats in Particularly Cats, a small book which conveys so truthfully the real interdependence of humans and cats. It is curious how these mysterious creatures have always been there alongside of some of the most celebrated artists in history.

Over 10 years ago, I inherited Penny, a petite, shy, and gentle tortoiseshell female cat. Since Penny arrived into my life, I’ve noticed even more the relationship between cats and artists, musicians, actors, and writers among others. Now that I’ve converted into a ‘cat lover,’ the loving connection makes sense to me.

So let me indulge today by introducing to you 50 remarkable cats along with their famous friends who happen to be some of the most influential people of the last 100 years.
