It is interesting to note that murals have become cross-pollinators of sorts. Street art by name brands like Banksy have become not-to-be-missed attractions for a growing number of travelers, often drawing them out of the beaten tourist-path and into emerging neighborhoods where they would have never ventured otherwise.

The line has also been blurred between graffiti’s original quality of guerrilla, illegal, transgressive expression: some street artists have gone from creating illegal art to gaining corporate commissions and appearing in art galleries. The transition isn’t always seamless, though: Shepard Fairey—of OBEY sticker and Obama poster fame—was arrested in Boston outside his show opening in 2009 on vandalism charges, for example.

Although boundaries might have relaxed somewhat, the law is still enforced (albeit capriciously at times), making this form of artistic expression not only dangerous, but always in danger of disappearing. Point in case is the most recent street art casualty in NYC, 5 Pointz. Despite the efforts of many to save this Long Island City’s venue from demolition, the renowned graffiti haven has finally met its end. The massive warehouse that served as Queen’s biggest street art canvas was whitewashed overnight, erasing nearly 30 years of New York art history.

Maybe commissioned murals are the solution to the ephemeral character of this type of work, but those always come with strings attached. Any other suggestions, art-loving readers?
