As many of us know, Massimo Vignelli is one of the modern fathers of Graphic Design; his adventurous, innovative and creative work helped mold the Design Field as we know it today. So it’s never too late to learn a bit about him or to be inspired again by his color and type treatment.
Vignelli was born in 1931 in Milan, Italy, where he grew up and studied Architecture in the Politecnico di Milano and later at the Università di Architettura, Venice. In the ’60s he came to New York City, bringing with hime his beautiful wife Lella Vignelli, who was a pivotal influence on his pursuits and his designs. They brought with them the freshness of Italian design. They were always collaborating and working on a variety of mediums and in diverse subjects, from interior design, environmental design, package design, graphic design, furniture design, and product design.
There is so much that surrounds us that Vignelli created it would be hard to identify it all. For instance, he designed the iconic signage for the NYC Subway system during his time in NYC, as well as United Colors of Benetton, Bloomingdales, American Airlines and Knoll logos, just to mention a few.
Something that all of his work has in common is the ageless aspect of it; it seems as if these past 40 years had never passed and those designs could be created by someone today.
Vignelli lived in NYC for most of his life, dying in 2014. He founded Vignelli Associates with Lella, where they created iconic work, which has had impacts on everyone, even people that don’t it.
Here you can watch a trailer for a documentary called Design is One, created by Kathy Brew and Roberto Guerra that shows the influential life and work of Lella and Massimo. The complete documentary is available for order. And if you are a big fan of timeless books here are a few recommendations which you might find interesting and where you can find more images, and principles of design written by the iconic designer.
