Not long ago I was doing some research about light in relation to darkness and color; and I came across many pieces in which light plays a huge roll in making the design powerful and meaningful. In this case the source of light is the design piece itself, and, in my opinion, it’s beautiful.
The Italian design group called Artemide was founded in 1960. It is one of the most well known illumination brands in the world. Artemide’s iconic contemporary designs have been shown worldwide in museums such as MoMA, Met and the Pompidou in France, among others.
Artemide designed this piece in collaboration with Bjarke Ingles of BIG. They created a huge alphabet made of light. “Exploring the language of light – quite literally – the alphabet series evolved from BIG’s creation of a new typeface that was translated and manifested as lighting modules that can be utilized either in straight or curved formats–the series use precise geometric proportions with elements that can be combined to build countless light structures, both essential and complex.”
The structures are nicely done and possess certain technological complexity, “the individual parts are linked with electromagnetic joints that are concealed, without shadows or discontinuities. Additionally, connections are easy and ensure maximum composition, configuration freedom with the sections revealing a patented optical system that works with innovative materials. As a result, the emitted light produced is comfortable and diffused.”
Here are some photos of the installation in Milan during design week. Where it is possible to appreciate the proportion of the letters and the intensity of the light in contrast with the dark and white space. I personally love the letterforms, I wish I had my name made out of those incredibly designed lights.
