“Visualizing the invisible is always fascinating, and motion visualizations have been created even in pre-digital times with light, photography, costumes or paintings.” Says Tobias Gremmier, the creator of this stunning piece titled Kung Fu Motion Visualization.

When I first saw this motion piece, I immediately thought of one of my favorites paintings: Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. The 1912 oil painting by Marcel Duchamp depicts motion by successive superimposing images, similar to stroboscopic motion photography. 104 years later German-born Tobias Gremmier brings motion back in a fresh and unique way. The inspiration came from “the dynamics of motion and philosophy of Kung Fu” Gremmier explains.

Mr. Gremmier is a designer, media artist, author, docent, and musician based in Hong Kong. Kung Fu Motion Visualization was commissioned by the International Guoshu Association for a Kung Fu exhibition taking place this coming September. Initiated by Mr. Hing Chao in an effort to preserve Kung Fu and China’s cultural heritage.

Watching the video is mesmerizing. The color palette, compositions and forms give the piece an ethereal fluidity, grace and beauty. “I have described some of the methods that I applied in this work in my book Grids for the Dynamic Images, published 2003.” Gremmier says.
