How does it feel to get the first glimpse of New York on a 4th of July night with Manhattan glittering under the night sky? For Rafafel Esquer, that first night in Manhattan was love at first sight, something he has tried to capture in his new iconic illuminated map of NYC.
According to the designer, this map is composed of more than 600 icons, which is nearly 200 more than the 2013 original. this new version includes 28 new buildings, 23 celebrities, 20 media outlets, 12 cultural institutions, 11 urban legends, 10 writers, 8 sports teams, 3 superheroes, and 1 saint. More than 200 major buildings, landmarks, and organizations are identified by name and silhouette in the border around the map and new quirky details can be found everywhere: look for pizza-rat in the east village, the miracle on the Hudson, a diamond-garnished martini, and a few legally topless women wandering about.
The introductory video to the map gives us glimpses of New York as we know it, glamorous, glittering and alive. It features this glorious map and connects it to the city and its myriad elements. Set on a sizzling jazz number this video is all set to connect you to an idea of New York straight out of the Sinatra song. The beautiful hand lettering is done by internationally reputed Minal Nairi.
