When in the face of humanitarian and global crises, many people are often faced with the crushing question of “how can I help to make a difference?” It seems that there isn’t much else to do past monetary or material donations, and most people aren’t professional humanitarian workers. A lot of us can’t quite connect our jobs and what we know how to do well to a tangible solution to help those who are in need of it. And practically no one for sure would think of fashion as a means to help those like the Syrian refugees.

Except someone did.

Parsons School of Design graduate Angela Luna realized that apparel design wasn’t just meant for runways and clothing stores. She realized that her skills as a fashion designer didn’t just have to end at the level of designing good-looking clothing. Luna used her passion and innovativeness to create and found Adiff, a socially, environmentally, and globally aware fashion brand with the mission to use design to help refugees in a desperate search for a new home. She created a multipurpose clothing piece that can be switched up as a tent for two, or a backpack. Another one of her creations is a reversible piece of outerwear that can either reflect or camouflage you when you’re on the move when you need it.

Prototypes of her designs traveled with her to Greece, where she realized that people were willing to buy her designs and use them to aid them in their travels, prompting her to pursue with her garments as not just a beacon of humanitarian awareness, but fuel for a viable business too. Luna has high hopes for Adiff: she wants to utilize ethical manufacturing and producing, partner with big humanitarian and fashion names, and to be able to employ refugees to help her grow and expand her business.

The bottom line is this: don’t let pre-dispositioned notions of what you should be doing with the skills and expertise you possess stop you from thinking out of the box and using it for something good.
