Last weekend, I watched Wonder Woman. Honestly, I had no intentions of watching this movie. Don’t get me wrong; I love superheroes. I grew up watching everything from Justice League to X-Men to Teen Titans on CartoonNetwork. Wonder Woman never appealed to me because she seemed very one dimensional and…lame (granted my limited knowledge of her was her role on Justice League).

My friend convinced me to watch Wonder Woman this weekend because she told me it’s the first superhero film with a female director (Patty Jenkins). That sparked my interest because I am 120% about supporting women, so I said sure, why not?

If I had one word to describe the entire movie, it would be empowering. I’m not going to spoil it for you (since I know you’re going to watch it), but this poignant story couldn’t have arrived at a better time in the U.S. Also, those fight scenes were flat out awesome. I avoid most action films, but these scenes were so well done that I’m inspired to start taking kickboxing classes again.

Driving home from the movies with my friend, I was excited just thinking about all the little girls watching this movie. But it’s just one movie, who cares? Let’s not kid ourselves. The media greatly affects our perceptions for better or for worse. It’s another kind of societal education that seeks into our subconscious, especially for children’s developing brains. Also, it wasn’t until recent years that the media has had any positivity towards females. They are more conscious about what they promote now, which is a huge step. I’m happy to say that many companies and media outlets are changing the conversation about female stereotypes, but we still have a long way to go.

Inspired by Wonder Woman, I created a short list of my top 6 favorite ads and campaigns countering female stereotypes:
