It’s almost two years since Kobe Bryant retired and he hasn’t stopped competing. The five-time NBA champ is still competing for awards…but this time he is not looking for a ring. Recently it was announced that his short animated film titled Dear Basketball was among the nominees for the 2018 Oscars Academy Awards.

Kobe, also known as the “Black Mamba,” teamed with Disney animator Glen Keane to direct his film; and multiple Oscar-winner, John Williams, to compose the score. In this five minute animation, Bryant narrates his journey throughout his basketball career. The storytelling is actually a poem that Kobe wrote for The Player’s Tribune back in 2015 while putting an end to his sublime basketball career.

Glen’s hand-drawn animation was able to bring to life Kobe’s idiosyncrasies throughout his 20-year career. Opting to use the pencil as a key element for designing this short clip was fantastic. It makes it overall fun and dynamic that leads your eye through a continuous journey.

Dear Basketball will be competing against Garden Party by Victor Caire and Gabriel Grapperon, Lou by Dave Mullins and Dana Murray, Negative Space by Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata and Revolting Rhymes by Jakob Schuh and Jan Lachauer. We’ll find out on March 5th when ABC airs the annual Academy Awards. Best of luck to Kobe and I hope he gets another award added to his collection!
