The Way North is a new play by Tira Palmquist that through four intricate, compelling characters poses difficult moral questions about immigration, politics, refugees, law enforcement, race, and civil and moral duties. Therefore, it makes sense that a powerful play like The Way North will be part of Amphibian Stage 20th Anniversary Season. Keep your eyes open for its stage reading in 2019.
As you might know, Amphibian is a long-standing client of Alfalfa Studio. Since we started our creative collaboration in 2014, the fall has always been a very special time for us at Alfalfa. It is the time when we get to read all the plays of the new season and also, help launch the new campaign to promote their productions. Each campaign consists of creating a set of posters that will be used throughout the year.
As we are furiously working on this year’s campaign, I thought it’d be fun to show you our work in progress. I’m sure you’ve noticed that we are obsessed about design. One of the parts we enjoy the most is the ideation phase. That is when we come up with ideas. After reading the play we dig deep into sketching. Internally, we challenge ourselves to come up with at least 100 sketches. The best ones are presented to the client.
Take a look at the initial sketches for The Way North. Below is a synopsis of the play.
When a lost, cold and very pregnant young woman stumbles on to her rural homestead in the Minnesota wilderness, Freddy Hansen doesn’t hesitate to take her in. It’s the right thing to do, and as the county’s former Sheriff, Freddy has dedicated her life to protecting and serving others. But when her new guest turns out to be a Sudanese refugee making a run for the Canadian border, what it means to protect and serve becomes a more complicated, and far more dangerous, question.
What do you think? Which idea do you think has potential? Be on the lookout for when we unveil the 2019 Season in the upcoming weeks, it’s going to be visually powerful.
