This weekend is not like any other weekend. When I mean a whole country will be paralyzed for 90 minutes I mean it. Not just one country but rather the whole football community. Boca Juniors vs River Plate will play one of the most historic finals of all times; an event that has never happened before in a major competition such as the Copa Libertadores. In my point of view this final even surpases any of the Champions league in terms of historic values. This has been a week not suitable for the weak hearted. The nervous feeling, the anxiousness, all these pregame feelings are taking over the hincha body and I am not an exception. To celebrate this historical final, there’s nothing better than to share some beautiful illustrations regarding these two teams by Pablo Lobato.
Throughout my whole life, I have always had two teams that I have released all my emotions for and they are Monterrey and River Plate. I grew up watching river plate games and in 1996 I saw River lift the Copa Libertadores for the first time in my life. Growing up as a river fan it was hard for me to even like anything related to Boca Juniors but when a young kid named Riquelme surge out of nowhere and played the sport like no one ever has, he became an exception. I tried to hate him but how could I if he played like the gods. Yes, he did cause many tears and madness to river fans but he has been the best number 10 I have ever seen play. What these two teams have contributed to football is something to celebrate.
Going back to the topic of today’s blog post; I want to present the illustrations of the talented Pablo Lobato. This Argentinian based illustrator has gained fame around the art world for his beautiful bold and colorful portraits. His abstract and detailed illustrations have ranged from athletes such as Kobe Bryant to artist Lady Gaga. His work has been featured in prestigious platforms such as Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times, and Forbes. Throughout his career, he has illustrated a number of football player that includes players from River Plate and Boca Juniors. The footballers illustrated include iconic figures such as Maradona from Boca and Mascherano from River Plate. The portraits are abstract and the colors match the jersey they have worn. See below a few of the selection and may the best win this final…although I really want River to win!
P.S. Let the best win and let’s keep this a peaceful final without violence!
