Leaving one’s motherland must be one of the hardest things in life. Imagine leaving behind everything you know to venture into an unknown territory. As an immigrant myself, I can tell you it’s not easy; mind you, I was one of the lucky ones. I didn’t escape violence and poverty neither had to make a strenuously dangerous journey to enter this country.

Currently, over 14,000 immigrant children have a different story than mine. They are being held in detention centers, away from everything and everyone they know. Not only they are missing the things we often take for granted like family, home, school, and playgrounds but, tragically, they are missing their own childhood.

72U, the creative residency part of advertising agency 72andSunny recently launched a campaign to create awareness about this issue. It consists of two parts: an art installation of a giant milk carton and a site to encourage people to sign up a petition.

The giant sculpture is filled with 12,800 individual milk cartons, each one representing an immigrant child in detention. The text in the cartons spells words like, Freedom, Pet, Dad, Future, Friends, and many other which highlights what they are missing while there. It was on view at Venice, California’s Windward Plaza.

“We encourage everyone to spread awareness on the most preeminent civil rights issue of our time and demand change,” writes 72U in a press release. “We can no longer ignore this topic and must insist that humane policies are created for children and their families.”

What can one do? A simple thing would be to support the cause by signing the pledge at the project’s website.

Thank you 72andSunny, Now Art LA, and 14000andcounting.org for launching this important project.
