The Academy Awards are just around the corner, so we wanted to take the time to review the nominees before the ceremony. This time, we’ll take a look at the 5 great Production Design work nominated for the 2019 Oscar.
Production Designers are in charge of how the “setting” of the film looks like. Along with the Director of Photography, they command the look of any given film. Their vision goes from set construction to prop design. However, a good production designer goes further and creates a whole aesthetic concept for the film which reflects the emotions of it through objects, places, and color. It is said that the best production design happens when nobody notices it because it is so well done that it feels real and in tune with the story.
This year’s nominees for Best Production Design are Hannah Beachler (Black Panther), Fiona Crombie (The Favourite), Nathan Crowley (First Man), John Myhre (Mary Poppins Returns) and Eugenio Caballero (Roma).
These five designers took us to 5 different worlds, from the fantastic Wakanda to the Moon, going through Cuaron’s childhood memories of Mexico City to the 18th century and 1930s England. Beachler has been praised for creating the utopian super modern city of Wakanda, because she combined futuristic technology with classic African culture, creating a mix that took African roots to the highest standards. Nathan Crowley went back to basics by creating scale models of the Apollo 11 to create the realistic look that film has. Eugenio Caballero recreated dozens of blocks of Mexico City in the 1970s to create the fantastic long sequences in Roma, his research took him to history book but also through people’s memory of the city, the level of reality that he achieved is impressive and gives life to one of the most important characters in the movie: Mexico City.
These five nominees are truly worthy of the award, however only one will take it. And truth be told, we are really hoping it’s Eugenio Caballero.
