Alfalfa Studio: Why do you do what you do?

Flavio Carvalho: One day I decided to force myself to do everyday projects, in order to keep pushing myself. I started posting this on instagram and that kept me going. I didn’t ended up doing a post everyday, more like 3 times a week or so, but eventually I started doing more theme based projects and animations. I think this is a great way to learn and evolve your skills. I have been always passioned about playing in 3d, and using that for my personal projects it’s almost like a therapy and also help me learn more everyday.

AS: And since you seem to do such a wide variety of things, what are some of the biggest/favorite projects you’ve taken on?

FC: Now I see myself doing more motion and 3d than before – which I love. I think from the time I worked in design studios I really enjoy branding and graphic design. I miss doing that more to be honest. I also believe any project is fun when you have good collaboration, that could be collaborating with your peers or even clients. I was lucky to have had good clients that were open to new ideas and that helped boost the project outcome.

AS: What compelled you to do everyday projects? What kind of new skills did you pick up?

FC: I believe that for me it is important to try to learn something new every day, or at least try to develop my craft. Often the skills I developed by playing around in everyday projects get applied in some of the projects I’ve been working on at my full time job.

I would say that the skills I pickup varies a lot. It usually related to new things I want to learn. For example in 3D there are a ton of stuff to learn, getting better at materials, lighting, dynamic simulations, composition and animation. I usually go back in forth between all these areas and graphic design.

AS: You mentioned that your personal projects are almost like a therapy– can you speak more to the therapeutic quality of the work that you do?

FC: Sure – I see more as something I can spend hours working on with even realizing. Maybe it’s because it is a type of work that it’s remove from any pressure and it’s more about experimentation and expression. I try not to impose myself to create something everyday, I tend to do it in days that I feel more inspired by and idea, or something I see in the world.

AS: How did you come to do increasingly more motion and 3D and less branding and graphic design? And speaking more broadly to that, how has your art style changed over time?

FC: I believe partially it was due to the nature of the work I’ve been doing here in San Francisco, which has been mostly digital. Another factor is that now with GPU rendering, you can render short videos fairly quickly compared to what it used to be before, so that is definitely something that got me more into motion. I don’t if the style changes all that much to be honest, but that are times where I different interests in what I can do in 3d, for example right now I’ve been doing a lot of cloth explorations.

AS: Why do you think good collaboration is so important?

FC: Because it can help take the work to places you wouldn’t have anticipated before. It’s bring another perspective, it helps you break the mold and do things different.

AS: What do you want people on Instagram to gain from looking at your work? How has the response to your work been online?

FC: I receive a lot of messages from people that wants to start learning 3d because of my work, which make me happy. It would be nice to see the community of 3d designers grow. The response has been positive, some people say that the work make then relax, some people ask me to keep doing more stuff.

AS: Do you do anything outside of your motion and 3D work?

FC: I like photography. I am also a big fan of Formula 1, so I like to follow all the races that I can.
