A few months back, Alfalfa Studio was asked to design a set of murals for a brand new affordable housing building in Kingsbridge Heights in The Bronx. Our goal was to create a composition that aesthetically complements the beautiful new building, celebrates The Bronx rich history, and brings delight to residents and visitors alike.

Developed by B&B Urban and designed by a Bronx native architect, Michael Gelfand’s MHG Architects, the building will be the new home for people in need including formerly homeless tenants, low-income households and a small percentage would rent to middle-income families.

After deeply immersing ourselves in research and various site visits, we proposed a mural that highlights elements that would make any Bronxite proud. Hence, we named it Bronx Proud.

The Bronx Proud mural is a time travel through the things and events that make The Bronx a unique place. From its foundation, the Borough has gone through different stages of development and change. The mural looks to create a sense of community and union by showing how the past and the present of the Bronx are constructed by the different communities that call The Bronx “home.”

The overall mural is divided in two walls. The first wall shows a timeline of the borough, from its foundation to the present. Going through landmarks, events and icons that marked its history, and ending up with colorful lines whose colors were inspired by the flags of the original countries of the Bronx’s largest ethnic groups. The second wall wrap up the concept with an original Typographic composition reading “Bronx Proud.”

Together, both walls create a deep sense of identity based on, not just what the Bronx is right now, but how, by the union of different peoples, it has become a place to be proud about.

This week, the Alfalfa Studio team is working on painting the giant 13 feet high by 70 feet wide mural. Take a look and you are in the Kingsbridge Heights neighborhood come and give a hand.
