Watercolor painting can seem daunting and I realized this while working with the medium recently for an illustration here at Alfalfa studio. In my opinion, it is one of the toughest mediums to master and the kind of water and brushes you use plays a huge role in the final result. There is very little room for error as it is tough to fix mistakes. However, some artists seem to have mastered this technique and I have to say that Cindy Lane is certainly one of them.

Cindy Lane is an artist and illustrator from Perth, Australia who mesmerizes people and especially her Instagram followers with her beautiful watercolor painting and process videos. From a young age, Cindy was fascinated with water and marine life and she collects water from different seas all around the world and uses this to paint while at her studio. Her work mainly comprises of realistic painting of oceans, seas, and marine life. She creates beautiful prints of different kinds of fish that she sells on her online store and has now started online classes and workshops.

Cindy showcases the fluidity and transparency of the medium. She begins by mixing the pigment until it’s the desired consistency and color and then using her brush to lightly drop the pigment onto a wet section of the illustration. It’s so satisfying to watch her paint as the pigment spreads and feathers out on the wet paper. The thing that makes her work so beautiful is the color mixology and use of white space.
