Being an avid lover of hip hop and street style I thought it was only fitting for me to talk about my favourite “street style” artist, and illustrator Hebru Brantley.

Hebru is an American artist from Chicago, Illinois. His work is inspired by the South Side of Chicago’s Afro Cobra Movement. Brantley is well known for his contemporary, narrative driven work and his Afro -futuristic take on anime and graffiti. His work has a distinct graphic style and street aesthetic that is widely known and recognised.

His work is multifaceted and layered. It’s almost like he’s living in a parallel universe and depicting that through his work. He uses a variety of  mediums from oil, acrylic, water color and spray paint and sometimes even coffee and tea!

To me, the thing that makes Hebru Brantley’s work so fascinating is that he is able to maintain a cohesiveness in all his work while experimenting with and exploring different mediums.

Brantley’s art usually depicts a younger version of himself, pop and hip hop culture and art historical figures. He displays his work on a wide variety of mediums, from murals, sculptures and clothing to album art for Takeoff’s album – The Last Rocket and Chance the Rapper’s music video – “Angels”.

The bright colours palettes, pop art style and minute details is what makes his work so popular and has allowed him to work  and collaborate with some of the biggest brands like Cadillac, Hennessy, Hublot and Nascar.
