Nicknamed El Ciclon, San Lorenzo de Almagro is a historical Argentinian team that counts with all the blessings on their side. Their most popular fan is the Pope Francis, a renowned San Lorenzo fan who holds a membership to the Almagro based team. Since their foundation, the club has had a story closely related to religion, so it’s no surprise why Benedict is a fan.

The club was founded in 1908 in the neighborhood of Almagro, Buenos Aires by the local priest Lorenzo Massa. With unsafe transportation networks being developed all around Buenos Aires, the priest offered a safe place for kids to play football at the Oratorio, San Antonio installation; In exchange, the boys had to attend mass every Sunday. The club was named by the priest to commemorate the famous battle of San Lorenzo victory as well as paying homage to Christian martyr Saint Lawrence.

San Lorenzo de Almagro acronyms are centered inside the swizz shield surrounded with Blaugrana (Blue & Red) stripes that embrace the iconic color from their longtime local jersey. The colors originated through an interesting story where priest Massa raffled two distinct color jerseys through a football match. The priest decided that San Lorenzo would embrace the color of the winning squad which would end up being the Blaugrana colors the currently delights pope, Francis.
