What is Rob Janoff famous for? It’s simple. He designed the Apple logo. In 1977, Janoff created what is one of the most well-known marks in the world today at the ad agency Regis McKenna. Even though the logo has gone through a few tweaks over the years, the design still remains true to Janoff’s original vision.

The first logo Apple ever had was Ron Wayne’s 1976 drawing of Isaac Newton. However, Jobs commissioned a new design the following year after knowing that the original logo would never be suitable for a brand. Since 1977, the Apple logo has remained the same, aside from a few alterations in 1998, and has been a critical feature in Apple’s global success.

When presenting the design to Apple, Janoff was so sure about the logo that there was just one version, aside from the same design of the apple, just without the bite in it. That apple never got shown. Additionally, the colored stripes in the 1977 logo came from the fact that, at that time, Apple was the only computer that produced colored images on the monitor. Even though those stripes have since been removed, the logo still reflects Janoff’s logic that, if a computer is “named after a piece of fruit”, then the “image should look like the fruit”.
