Throughout the world, Nike’s logo is one of the most recognized logos today. The Nike mark proves that the simplest designs often have the greatest impact. While a student at Portland State University in 1971, graphic designer Carolyn Davidon first created the brand’s iconic swoosh. However, she was only paid $35 for the design by Nike founder Phil Knight. Later, in 1983, Knight gave Davidson an envelope containing Nike stock and a gold swoosh ring embedded with a diamond.

The design of the logo came from Davidson’s outline of the wing of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory that the company was named after. To many, the logo is viewed as a symbol of positivity. When Davidson was creating the logo, one of the key features that Knight wanted was a logo that conveyed motion and he was impressed by the stripes in the logo of the company Adidas. According to Davidson, she found it difficult to create a logo that was original and would make Nike stand out. Today, aside from a few minor adjustments with the Nike lettering, Davidson’s original logo has remained unchanged.
