Reid Miles was an American Graphic Designer who worked for Blue Note Record Label during the 50s and 60s. He designed album covers for Jazz musicians. He utilized Francis Wolff’s photography of the Jazz musicians and created amazing record covers few could ever forget. He created layouts that fused typography and imagery in a playful way; stacking them on top of each other and often mimicking a certain characteristic in the imagery used. He created asymmetric layouts that were balanced and interesting using cropped photos that were embedded within shapes or the typography itself.

I really enjoy the layouts on the Blue Note covers because of his way with type and image. He paired the images with colored overlays and created a mood within the pieces that felt correct for the work. His way of cropping the images, often into shapes of all sizes to give different focal points for the covers, was very interesting. Especially when he cropped images into the shape of the keys on the piano, or embedded the images into the typography itself.
