The 1972 Olympic games are iconic not only for the athletics, but also for the brilliant posters designed by Otl Aicher. During the 20th century, Aicher was a pioneer of graphic design and created the visual identity for the 1972 Munich Olympics. His timeless designs feature color blocking, sparse text, and soft secondary shades combined in layers. Together, this winning combination creates an image that is sophisticated, clean, and simple.

Aicher himself was an eminent typographer and graphic designer. He founded the Ulm School of Design and his use of stick figures for public signage revolutionized the graphic design industry. When he was approached by the organizers of the 1972 Summer Olympics and offered the Olympic Games’ lead designer’s position, Aicher received the instruction that his designs must complement Munich’s newly built stadium.

For inspiration, Aicher consulted Masaru Katsumi, the designer for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. After reviewing Katsumi’s work, Aicher based his own creations partly on previously employed iconography and developed a set of pictograms. The purpose of the pictograms was to convey a visual representation of each sport that the stadium featured. In addition, the posters also aided both athletes and visitors in navigating within the Olympic stadium and village. As well as the 1972 brand identity, Aicher is known for creating the Munich Olympics logo and the first official Olympic mascot, the dachshund.
