Engaging. Unapologetic. Inviting. These are the thoughts that crossed my mind while I studied the packaging design for OAT–LY!, a sustainable Swedish manufacturer of oat-based vegan foods and drinks. I first came across the ad a few years ago on the subway as the train passed by the station. What immediately captured my attention was the bold copy, the tone of the copy and it’s visually pleasing aesthetic, set in an illustrative typeface. Everything about the packaging design and the ad was visually pleasing. The illustrative typefaces used for the product and copy, gave the design a personal feel. The tone of the message made the ad feel like you were having a conversation. The entire packaging design greatly relied on the illustrative typefaces that paired with an interesting banter that possibly amused and intrigued viewers to make a purchase out of curiosity.

OAT–LY!’s package design was created by forsman & bofendors, a global creative collective. According to the designers, they embedded ads inside the packaging because of limited funds for their media budget. This was an interesting idea because it captures the attention of shoppers and allows them to experience the design work. The illustrations on the packaging were created in a fun whimsical manner, adding a sense of playfulness to make the message inviting. This allows viewers to learn about the beliefs of the company in a friendly personable way. The texture in the packaging gives a natural, organic feel to the work, possibly highlighting the process in which the oatmilk is derived.

Overall, the packaging design for OAT–LY! is very impressive and interesting. It really grabbed my attention and stood out in the Dairy section in grocery stores. If your curious to try some of OAT–LY!’s oatmilk, you can visit their website to purchase a carton of oatmilk in a location near you.
