William Henry Johnson was an African American painter. He painted in a variety of styles throughout his career as an artist. His expressionistic paintings harbored brush strokes that exude emotion and created texture on the canvas. He created simplistic marks and shapes utilizing bold colors in his folk art paintings which exude a child-like innocence in the work. He was an artist that garnered inspiration from his environment and developed that inspiration into works of art that span many different themes and styles in his career. The themes he portrayed in his artwork range from life in the South and Harlem, Military, portraits and landscapes. He created beautiful works of art that display different stories and style with each new artwork you come upon when viewing his work.

I first found out about Johnson’s artwork a few years ago and was amazed by his caliber of work. I especially love the folk art paintings of the South and their naivety they protrude. To me, the simplicity exhibited in the style is why I love it, it’s direct and acts as a documentary into the life of its characters. I love the colors he uses to give each piece a voice as it speaks to the viewer. At the same time, his expressionist work really speaks from his spirit onto the page as the brush strokes reveal what is within.
