Another amazing artist of the past: Lois Mailou Jones. Jones was an artist who painted in many different themes and in many styles throughout her career. She gained inspiration for her work through her many travels and in life. These travels included trips to France, Haiti, and Africa. Before Jones was a fine artist, she was a designer, apprenticing with Grace Ripley and experimenting with African mask influences in the work. In some paintings one is able to see the inspiration of the African masks in the work displayed on the canvas. Some themes that inspired her artwork range from landscape paintings, abstract paintings, still life, portraiture, to everyday life for African Americans. She was also inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and Alain Locke to include themes in her work of her heritage.

What I enjoy about Jones’s work is her experimentation with different painting styles. When looking at many of the paintings she created over the years, you’re able to see the progression and differentiation in style. For example, I really enjoy her Parade de Paysans, painting that is created in a cubist-like style. All the characters and elements in the painting have sharp lines and feel very angular and rigid. Whereas, Fire Dancers, feels somewhat abstract mixed representational but in a more organic style. The aggressive brush strokes that dominate Fire Dancers gives the canvas an energy that displays the energy taking place while dancing by the fire. It is a very beautiful piece.

Lois Mailou Jones played an instrumental part in paving the way for African American artists. She faced racial injustices in her career but refused to let that stop her in her pursuit to become a great artist. She continues to inspire many artists to this day.
