Lauren Hom, a designer and letterer, teaches art classes and works for clients such as AT&T, YouTube, Google, Starbucks, and TIME Magazine. On her Instagram, which has over 200k followers, Hom posts images of her lettering on murals, posters, cards, and more. Based in Detroit but originally from Los Angeles, her work has been featured in Imprint and Complex magazines. Hom is also the author of Daily Dishonesty, a popular lettering project that she started online and developed into a blog and a book.

Overall, Hom is known for her playful, quirky letterforms and bright color palettes. Some of the organizations that have recognized her work include the Type Director Club, the Webby Awards, and Communication Arts. Hom started lettering way back in middle school when she used to doodle song lyrics all over her notebooks. After taking an Intro to Typography class in college, Hom continued to explore typography further by practicing on her own for fun.

When searching for creative ideas, Hom uses her own life and experiences as inspiration. Since she travels frequently, the base of many of her creative projects comes from vintage objects. These include colorful buildings, hand-painted signage, and local patterns and textures.

Yes, we are all still going places ? (just not physical ones right now, plz stay home if you can). You could explore inward places like your creativity by making something just for the joy of making. Consider a visit to your softer places by finally giving yourself permission to take a break. Tap into your caring places by calling your friends, supporting your communities or donating to organizations like food banks, worker relief funds, etc.? ????????? This mural was painted for @google at their HQ two summers ago ?. Created for their Daydream office (virtual reality), this piece was my visual interpretation of what the future of VR looks like: a little abstract but bright and moving forward nonetheless ? I wanted to share this today because it’s also how I’m choosing to see our collective future. Even with all the uncertainty and unease in the world right now, we’re seeing people come together, support each other and reconnect with what matters to us (both as individuals and as a whole). We’re still moving forward ? . . . . . #muralpainting #muralart #muralpainting #officemural #goodtype #typespire #typegang #typetopia #thedailytype #handpainted #letteringmural #muralist #muralsdaily

Here’s what a typical work day looks like for me!??Every time I write out my *honest* schedule I’m surprised by all the time I’m wasting dicking around on the internet and this week’s #HOMwork assignment is no different haha. What is it about having your schedule in front of you that makes the potential free time SO OBVIOUS? (Also, why can’t I stop dicking around on the internet?!?) ????????? The spread of COVID-19 means that most of us are facing massive changes to our daily schedule. We are also staring down scarier things like quarantine, potential sickness in our communities and uncertain times for our creative businesses. And you know what? I’ve found that the times in my life where things have felt particularly dark or scary are where I’ve ended up really benefiting from a personal-time audit. ????????? ?The reason for that is simple: **Knowing where the free time is allows us to schedule in things that feed our souls and boost our mental and emotional well-being.** ????????? That’s why this week’s #HOMwork2020 assignment is to letter or illustrate your daily routine. It’ll (hopefully) help you feel a little more in control and give you some ideas about how you can make positive changes to your time. For some of us that might mean taking on more creative endeavors, while others may use the found time to practice good self care. Or perhaps no changes are needed! The person who best knows what you need…is you ? ????????? If you’re craving community and creativity in your life, (especially during this season of social distancing), check out #HOMwork – a weekly prompt + thoughtful thoughts that I email out every Friday morning to help creative people find their voice, create art, and gain the confidence to share it online! Calling all stressed out creatives! ??? What was the last thing you treated yourself to? For me, it was having this cookie lettering idea in my head and then giving myself an entire, uninterrupted day to experiment with it…and here it is! Yes, this is a real chocolate chip cookie I baked and retouched (swipe to see process ?) ????????? When I typically think of “treat yourself” things, my mind goes to indulgences first: taking a hot bath with a big glass of red wine, splurging on the nice vanilla extract, getting a massage. Is that where your mind goes first, too? While those are all lovely things, I’ve been challenging myself to think of treats in a creative sense, like self-care but for my artistic practice? ????????? What activities relax my creativity the same way a hot bath relaxes my body? Can I allow myself to “splurge” a large chunk of time towards a crazy idea I’ve been itching to explore the same way I allow myself to “splurge” my money on a thing I’ve been eyeing? ????????? Whether you’re a freelancer or full-timer, being creative for a living is stressful! But without fail, the one thing that helps me feel more balanced and present is to carve out time to create whatever I want to create, no matter how seemingly trivial. If you’ve managed to read this far, I challenge all of you to treat yourself to some creative self-care in the upcoming weeks. Allow yourself to indulge those ideas you’ve had bouncing around in your head? ????????? Leave a comment below telling me about the creative things you’re going to explore! Or better yet, carve out time in your schedule and add it to your calendar right now. (I like to give myself at least a half day on the weekends, but if you’re busy, even just one hour can be so refreshing!)?? . . . . . #foodlettering #foodtype #creativeproject #creativeadvice #designspiration #goodtype #createeveryday #creativeinspiration #selfcaretips #creativelettering #creativecareer #freelancingfemales #foodart #playwithyourfood #passionproject #personalwork #artistadvice

Did you know I didn’t study type or lettering in college? I graduated from @svanyc with a degree in Advertising in 2013, ready to follow my dreams of being a creative director at a big NYC ad agency someday. Well, my dreams took a bit of a detour and now I'm a lettering artist & illustrator ?? thanks to a project I started in school called Daily Dishonesty. ????????? Even though I didn't end up pursuing what I originally studied, the ad background I got in school has proved to be my secret weapon as a lettering artist. Turns out, it's a lot easier to sell a product when you know & love the product ? ????????? This video was from when @svanyc profiled profiled me in their series about notable alumni! It was screened at SVA’s Open House for prospective art school students (swipe to see a photo from the screening – omg haha!) ? ????????? Psst…if you’re still in school right now and stressing because you’re questioning your major: it’s okay! Whether you stay the course or change majors, your career path will most likely take twists and turns that you can’t even imagine right now. Everything you learn will come in handy later on. I stayed the practical course while in school (even though my gut was like ‘but lettering is more fun!’) and made my change a little less than a year into my first full-time job (a terrible time to quit haha). . . . . . #schoolofvisualarts #freelancedesigner #svanyc #artschool #handlettering #lettering #creativecareer #passionproject #freelnceillustrator

Let’s get this bread (lettered this phrase from @wtfshouldiletter)! ??? Did you catch my long ass IG Story series on making money this weekend? It’s something I’ve been wanting to speak about but holding back on for a while (because comfort zone, so comf)…but I finally did it because I realized it’s more helpful to all of you to be transparent than to keep it secret in my head. Okay also I did have a glass of wine before and my tolerance is super low from doing dry January so maybe that helped?? ????????? Anyways, this year I’m trying to do more things that scare me and talking about money is definitely one of them! I saved all of it to the first Story Highlight on my profile if you wanna take a peek ? ????????? Fellow creative people: what’s been on your mind when it comes to money lately?? When I started out, I was so curious how artists even made a living and just wanted to not get sweaty before sending a $500 estimate to a client. I had no idea that seven years and a few extra zeros later, I’d be just as sweaty and nervous about talking about these big numbers? ????????? P.S. Thank you to everyone who sent encouraging messages after I got vulnerable about money! Whenever I see successful people share their stories, I feel nothing but EXCITED for them. And I know that I should feel that way about myself too (and I mostly do). Your kindness and support are helping me navigate this super complex topic and I am grateful for you ??

What are you stocking your creative pantry with this year? I’ve spent the last 6 years building my career using staple ingredients like building up my portfolio, defining my voice, and making passion projects.
