Devs, the new creation of Alex Garland (Ex Machina and Annihilation) follows the story of a tech company, named Amaya, doing experimental work in quantum computing. The topics of Devs are truly existential, throwing questions at the audience about determinism and fate. However, the philosophical questions are surrounded by a world that could possibly resemble the future of Silicon Valley.

Mark Digby was the production designer in charge of bringing this high tech world to live. The highest tech set in the show is the Devs laboratory, which is host to the world’s most powerful quantum computer. To design the lab, Mark consulted with different tech experts on how to design a super-secure building for a super-secret project. The final result was a floating cube inside a concrete building, which actually reminded me of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library in Yale. The lab itself is made of lead, concrete, and gold to block numerous types of interference but the actual set was made of wood and plaster. For the pattern on the wall, the team used 240 squares of gold leaf and 440 panels to create the final look.

I think the Devs lab is one of the best sets I’ve recently seen in any TV production, it’s a wonderful piece of futuristic technology that feels real but also has an ephemeral aspect to it, which felt perfect for the questions that the show talks about.

Make sure to check out Devs streaming now on Hulu.
