Kenny Scharf, a painter, sculptor, muralist, and installation artist, first rose to fame in the 1980s downtown art scene of New York. Along with his fellow street artist, Keith Haring, Scharf was a part of the 1980s East Village Art movement. His work commonly features stylized animals and colorful patterns. According to Scharf, he seeks to bring art into the everyday life and many of his gestural murals continue to adorn New York streets today.

Scharf was one of the first artists to combine contemporary art with elements of street culture. As an artist, his work reaches beyond the boundaries of fine art to connect to pop culture. Scharf’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions such as the Miami Center for the Fine Arts, the Queens Museum of Art, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
