Have you ever heard of the Futhark runic alphabet? Maybe not but I’m pretty sure you’ve seen some of its characters. It is the oldest form of the runic alphabets used by Germanic tribes for Northwest Germanic dialects. But the Futhark alphabet has always carried another more mysterious attribute. For centuries it’s been considered to be a magical symbolic system; this started in Nordic mythology but has been adopted by several magic traditions through the ages. Its characters have been traditionally used in ritualistic ceremonies. Several spiritual practices consider that each symbol in the Futhark alphabet carries a different energy from nature and the human experience. For example, the rune Tyr, which represents the Germanic god of the same name, stands for Justice, Sacrifice, it’s the Rune of the balance and justice ruled from a higher rationality.

In 2009, Norwegian band Wardruna took the job of creating hymns for each of the 24 characters of the Futhark alphabet. They named the project The Runaljod trilogy. It captures the essence of each character along with old stories and legends of Nordic mythology. The beauty of the trilogy lies in the band’s careful attention to detail in their lyrics but especially in the use of historical and traditional instruments including primitive deer-hide frame drums, flutes, kraviklyr, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, and lur. Non-traditional instruments and other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water, and torches give the songs a special natural beauty.

The Runaljod trilogy is a very special musical journey resulting from the inspiring dedication and passion of Wardruna’s members to their roots and to our common human spiritual experience with nature.
