5 Top Films Shot on an iPhone

Alfalfa Studio Branding and Communication Firm

Nowadays we can do just about anything with an iPhone, so the fact that filmmakers are using the smart device to tell stories is not surprising. But the artistry and innovative ways with which the filmmakers of these five acclaimed films are using the iPhone is worthy of praise.

TANGERINE

Tangerine, directed by Sean Baker, was shot with the iPhone 5s. Armed with an anamorphic adapter, Baker achieved the desired cinematic look for this Sundance festival darling. The movie takes place on Christmas Eve and tells the story of Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) a transgender working girl, who after a short stint in prison, is searching for the pimp who broke her heart.

Tangerine is being distributed by Magnolia Pictures and is out in theaters now.

AN UNEASY LIES THE MIND

An Uneasy Lies The Mind, directed by Ricky Fosheim is the first narrative film shot on iPhone. It was shot strictly with an iPhone 5. The crew used a special lens adapter to equip the iPhone with a melange of different lenses to tell the story of a man who slowly spirals out of control during a couple’s retreat in his isolated mansion.

PARANMANJANG/NIGHT FISHING

Paranmanjang, also known as Night Fishing, won the Golden Bear Award for best short film at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. The brothers Park Chan-wook and Chan-kyong shot the entire 30 minute movie using an iPhone. The fantasy-horror film features Korean pop star Lee Jung-hyun, as a man who encounters more than just a barracuda during what’s intended to be a mellow fishing trip.

I PLAY WITH THE PHRASE EACH OTHER

Alfalfa Studio Branding and Communication Firm

Jay Alvarez writes, directs and stars in this critically-acclaimed short film, shot exclusively with an iPhone, but I Play with the Phrase Each Other’s triumph is the way Alvarez tells the film’s story strictly through phone calls. He expertly weaves the viewers’ perspective of what’s happening by chiming in a phone call here, a phone call there, giving audiences the sensation they’re eavesdropping their way through the story.

ROMANCE IN NEW YORK

Alfalfa Studio Branding and Communication Firm

Romance in New York is the first film shot entirely with an iPhone 6. Through his POV, filmmaker Tristan Pope, depicts two lovers’ everyday lives in New York City, capturing along the way the subtleties of their relationship. The crew used the iPhone 6, with a HD2000 Glidecam, a Blackwing grip, and several tripods and shoulder rigs.

Are you inspired to grab your iPhone and shoot your masterpiece? Hope so!
