It’s no doubt that street style is highly influential in the fashion industry. The major impact that street style has on fashion is footwear, particularly sneakers, which has been a central piece in recent high-end fashion collections.

Sneakers are a never-ending culture that has been around for decades where people will do anything to get their hands on a pair. From rappers such as Kanye West to brands like Supreme, Jordan, and Kaws; they have stamped their presence in the sneaker world. Brands such as Balenciaga, Raf Simons, joined the previously mentioned brands in this new street fashion sneaker wave and released one of the top sneakers of 2017.

The intermingle between street footwear and fashion has led to a boom of many up and coming designers. 2017 was a year they consolidated themselves next to the top brands. Virgil Abloh for example, former creative director of Kanye West’s agency Donda, was the biggest fashion names of last year. He is the head designer for his brand Off-white and dropped one of the dopest sneakers. What makes his sneaker the biggest drop of the year is the artist’s approach: deconstructing the famous Air Jordan 1 and layering each piece back with minimal stitching. He included the literal title of the shoe  to its body and laces.

In the list you are about to see a few of what we consider the best-designed sneakers of 2017. The list is conformed not only to popularity, but also sneaker design. For example, the Tom Sachs‘ sneaker, inspired by space and NASA, is made of breathable, polyester warp-knit tricot mesh. The Nike vapor Max is the future of Airmax and it’s design has led them to collaborate with brands like Comme des Garçons.

One of the highlights of my recent trip to London was my visit to the Design Museum. I had the chance to see the 62 nominees for the Beazley Designs of the Year Award as well as voting for my favorites on each of the six categories.

Housed in the stunning museum, the exhibition is arranged thematically from activism to environment and more. Visitors are encouraged to vote for one design from each category including, Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product, and Transport.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the acclaimed Beazley Designs of the Year Award. The nominees really capture the spirit of the times from the Olympic Refugee flag to a clothing line by musician Kanye West for his “Life of Pablo” tour and from the TV graphics designed for the English Premier League to the iconic Pussyhat made and worn in protest of Donald Trump’s sexist remarks.

Visiting the exhibit was like using design as a form of time travel through the ups and downs of 2017. Remember Pokemon Go and the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D. C.? They were both nominated—in different categories! Of course, like in any competition, there were few nominees that I wouldn’t have chosen, but all in all the show is worth the visit.

The winners will be announced on January 25, 2018. That is one winner in each of the six categories and one overall winner.

Beazley Designs of the Year runs through February 18, 2018. A must see!

Nowadays, more and more fashion brands are starting to work with artists from all over the world. Names like Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Gucci have already started following this trend. Some of them are are great. In fact, it may be better than their typical advertisements. Let’s take a look at some of their works.

Some people believe that working with young artists can refresh an old luxury brand, but others disagree, saying it leads the established brands into a bad direction. Artists like Angelica Hicks have collaborated with Gucci.

No matter what you can not deny their new artworks are very beautiful.

It is quite ingenious as advertisements, putting Gucci’s products into the artworks. If you take a look at their wallpapers, you may find their color palettes are very pretty. For example, the one from their Decor is using yellow and purple, invoking the feeling from Vincent Van Gogh’s work. It also matches the vintage feeling of Gucci’s current collections. Many people love these artworks, and use them as their phone screen wallpapers. This is such a great way to advertise.

By the way, if you interested in these artworks, you can find them in Gucci’s app. They are free.

Parco, a chain of Japanese department stores, is one of the leaders in advertising during Christmas time. In the past, they have employed top-notch creators such as Viviane Sassen and German artist Juergen Teller to create engaging advertisements for Christmas shoppers in Japan. This winter, Japanese Fashion Designer Yoshikazu Yamagata and Photographer Yuji Hamada collaborated on this year’s advertising campaign, which included posters and a film.

The concept is “the red is waiting for the white Christmas,” which pays homage to “the black is waiting for the white” by Mario Giacomelli. They applied several experimental approaches in terms of film and photography, which makes this campaign different from any other advertisement right now.

Louis Vuitton is having an exhibition called “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez” in New York City. The exhibition was designed by Robert Carsen and planned by Oliver Saillard. “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez” guides the audience through the brand in different collections and how it changed from 1854 to today. Don’t think it is just a fashion exhibition. It also showed a lot of graphic design advertisements from the 1800s and 1900s.

In many of their ads, the type was elegant and beautiful. By that time, people were already trying to incorporate type with graphics. They tried to lay out the type in a rectangle shape to mimic the shape of their suitcases or use type to fill in space. These are the designs of various layouts that we are still using today. Compare with the Louis Vuitton ads today. Do you like their ads today or from 1800s and 1900s?

Don’t miss out on “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez” in New York. The address is 86 Trinity Pl, New York, NY 10006. You will definitely enjoy this exhibit if you are a fan of fashion.

Hold the phone, Timothy Goodman is taking over Uniqlo? Not literally, but in a sense, Timothy Goodman will win you over with his new collaboration with the global retail giant. Online tomorrow, shoppers will be able to wear a piece of art. I, myself, already have my eye on a shirt from his collection (but I won’t tell you, I’ll keep you guessing). The collaboration has a total of 30 pieces of clothes and accessories that feature his signature messages and illustrations.

This Friday, there will be an event in NYC to bring in the new collection from 4 to 6 PM on Fifth Avenue. You can reserve your spot at the event on Facebook.

Parsons Fashion MFA presented a fabulous fashion show in their 2017 MFA graduate runway show last week. Many were impressed by these nine young designers’ work. Each designer has their own very unique style, but all showed their passion for fashion and their talents in design.

The nine graduates were inspired by different things from society, such as culture, family, art, and politics. That makes their designs energetic, powerful and distinctive. They expressed their various concepts and attitudes by using their own distinctive style. For example, you can see from Zoe Champion’s work that layering is particularly effective when there is a notable contrast in the shade or texture of two overlapping objects. You may also feel Caroline Hu’s designs are like paintings. She applied splashes of tulle and lace to create colored abstract shapes in a very romantic way.

These Parsons Fashion MFA students worked very hard to create a unique product. See their work below.

Today’s inspiration comes from the country of Georgia. These striking set of black and white portraits were created by Nikolaz Bionika, a designer based in the city of Tbilisi.

The self-taught painter and designer combine traditional methods like photography with computer software to achieve these eye-catching results. A self-initiated project, “Dark Homonyms” provides the perfect canvas for experimentation.  They remind me of the work Victor Vasarely the ‘grandfather’ of the Op-art movement as well as the way fashion designer Rudi Gernreich depicted his models in the 60s and 70s.

What are the ingredients that make them work? Optical illusions, perfect symmetry, flat shapes, and stark black & white photography. I can see them in a campaign for an avant-garde fashion brand or on an editorial fashion story. They will definitely grab your attention.

You can see more of Bionika’s work in his Instagram account and website.

The new NBA season still hasn’t started and yet all I’ve been hearing, reading, and seeing is basketball related. It’s about two months before the NBA season starts and the big news is that Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics for Isiah Thomas. The past weeks has been all talk, from tradings, contract extensions, Ball sneakers, to who will win next season…and more importantly, the new Nike uniforms.

Nike will be the new face of the NBA who opted to leave the Adidas uniforms behind. Besides the Kyrie Irving situation, the new Nike uniforms are bringing a lot of attention by how nice they look. Nike signed an 8-year partnership with the NBA with uniforms that are eco-friendly. Each team will have four primary jerseys, leaving behind the home and away tradition. Each jersey is composed of at least twenty recycled plastic bottles.

This new deal is taken very seriously by Nike, who is doing all that’s in their hands to make the best possible design and quality for their merchandise. It is said that the 2016 USA Olympic Basketball Team tested these uniforms, giving them feedback that would improve the design for the athletes. The jerseys seem to have a comfortable fit and an attractive minimalistic design.
