Alfalfa Studio recently entered the Orlando Flag competition. Who knew designing flags was so difficult? Luckily, Ferdio, an infographic agency in Copenhagen, used their fascination to create a distinguished infographic about flag design. Flag Stories is a comprehensive project exploring the visual graphics of flags. After extensive research, Ferdio found many books explaining the history, demography, and culture of flags, but none of them focused on the visual aspects. Ferdio was interested in uncovering the hidden stories and symbolism behind the visuals.
The infographic agency researched every flag in the world and gathered data about them. The more they researched, the more stories they discovered. They plan to continue to add to this infographic project and continue to tell visual stories through the data. A few different topics they explored include: dominating flag layouts, most used main colors, number of colors in flags, what do flag colors symbolize, and most used symbols in flags.
As I scrolled through the project website, I found myself questioning why so many flags used the star symbol and why did no one like the color yellow. Red is a strong, aggressive color and also the most used color in flags. Do countries gravitate towards red because it symbolizes a sense of power? Red symbolizes blood, bravery, strength, and struggle while yellow symbolizes mineral wealth, sun, generosity, and freedom. Each infographic is balanced and digestible. I loved how clearly the information is presented and how they utilized white space to avoid overwhelming the audience. It’s obvious that Ferdio put a lot of thought, time, and effort into this project.
