Kim Goulbourne: Technology with a Human Touch

Today, most Apps and websites I come across are focused on millennial problems about convenience. While I appreciate the fact that I can hitch a ride with a few taps from my fingertips, I wonder if there is more to technology than making life more convenient. At what point does it become too extravagant? Rarely have I come across a quirky, digital platform that inspires the human touch. I admit, even as a graphic designer, I am a bit anti-technology (print will never die, I won’t let it!). Also, there is just nothing more liberating than the physical act of creating.

Last week I came across Bitter Renter, an interactive guide for first-time renters in NYC created by Kim Goulbourne. When I first discovered this website, I thought it was sent from God. The most terrifying aspect of moving to NYC is finding an apartment. Besides this website being a great concept, it is aesthetically beautiful and user-friendly.

Kim Goulbourne is an NYC-based maker, designer, and coder originally from Kingston, Jamaica. She is a founder and creative partner at Bourn and a designer at Thoughtbot. Growing up, she was always interested in creative expression, but it wasn’t until sophomore year of college when she took her first Web Design class that everything changed.

Her projects caught my attention because empathy seemed to be the heart of every pursuit, for example, her “Send Thanks To” project. On this website, you can send your appreciation for someone with a few clicks. This idea is so simple and yet when was the last time you genuinely said “thank-you”? I make an effort to say “thank-you” as often as possible because sending someone your gratitude can go a long way. I love that Goulbourne fuses technology with humanity.

Another favorite project of mine is her “Founder Mantra.” It is a collection of daily mantras, quotes, and words to live by for founders by founders. The quotes aren’t overbearing and cheesy, they’re honest, funny, and authentic. I can sense a real person wrote it.

Her motto is “I can and I will” and her theme song is “Lose Yourself” by Eminem. Basically, she is one badass, multidisciplinary woman. Keep updated with her projects by following her twitter.
