There are many things to celebrate during the month of March. One of the biggest things that we sure haven’t been quiet about is Women’s History Month. For those of you who can walk around Wall Street in NYC, you may have noticed something new – another statue in addition to the famous Charging Bull.
The little bronze statue of the Fearless Girl stands opposite to the massive, masculine bull, as a symbol of feminine strength. It was put up on the eve of International Women’s Day by State Street Global Advisors, a large asset management company. This statue was in an effort to stand up and call out huge corporations to add more women to their boards.
Currently, women don’t take up a lot of positions in the upper levels of the corporate world. State Street Global themselves wanted to bring attention to the lack of diversity. They felt the power behind a statue of a little girl standing defiantly in line with the charging bull statue would send a compelling message. They urge organizations to support women who are fully capable of taking on top positions similar to their male counterparts.
Our society is starting to move in the right direction in terms of female equality in the workforce. We still have long ways to go, but this statue is one step forward towards an age of gender equality.
