Today is the opening for the Design Journeys You Are Here exhibition.

For the last few days alfalfa studio and a group of dedicated artists and friends have been busy painting the Design Journeys mural in full scale at the AIGA National Design Center. The Design Journeys mural was designed exclusively for this interactive exhibition.

Working non-stop for over 14 hours a day for the last couple of days, we are happy to see the mural completed. It was a unique experience to work with your hands as we created the mural the old fashion way. That is, after the design was completed in ink and paper we drew a grid the 34 x 8 feet gallery wall to start the job. The first day we drew in pencil the entire composition. The second day we carefully painted the intrinsic, organic design with paint, brushes, paint markers and waterproof Indian ink.

We were lucky to enlist some of the most creative people in the field. The whole process was documented by cinematographer extraordinaire Suat Kutlog (be on the lookout for a short documenting the project).

In addition, a handful of dedicated and talented designers and illustrators showed up to give a hand. As US cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead put it: “Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.” I agree, some of the best things are achieved by teamwork and this small, enthusiastic group accomplished something beautiful. Don’t you think?

Big, big thanks to all of our studio friends who came to help out: Miriam Castillo, Sho Momma, Minal Nairi, Marco de Mel Pedersen, Mattia Novello, Michele Washington. And, of course, my small, resourceful and powerful alfalfa studio team: Jessica Atkinson and Nigel Sielegar.

The mural is now waiting to be colored by visitors to the exhibition. TODA has done a terrific job putting together an interactive show that deals with the volatile subject of diversity. I hope you can make it to experience it by yourself.
