As with most rewarding choices, you don’t see where they take you in the long run. In my case, I was oblivious to the world of learning I was entering as I registered for a class under type maestro Tony Di Spigna.

Tony radiates his passion for teaching and does not hesitate to share his knowledge, staying true to his 40 plus years as a Communication and Graphic Design teacher. The Typographics class led to an Independent study when he encouraged me to create a typeface from of a hand-drawn title I created for one of the assignments. When someone of his expertise says so, you have no choice but to go for it. So I did.

One-on-one sessions of drawing and redrawing, re-redrawing characters for months made me all the more patient and strive for perfection. Until the drawn form was a 100% accurate, the computer was kept away from me. I was in type wonderland.

It was at the same time that I was part of Alfalfa Studio, another design Mecca that has contributed immensely to my growth as a designer. I was involved in the launch of the studio’s in-house brand Alfalfa New York while contributing to the Rafael Esquer’s Seven Latin Divas collection.

As I was shuttling between the two, one day Tony brings out his sketchbook – a treasure chest of ideas – and shows me his designs for t-shirts. Humorous, beautiful, witty, straightforward…each true to what he believes. I couldn’t help but bring my two worlds together and put Rafael and Tony in touch. Alfalfa seeds also could not say no when someone of his expertise comes with so many exciting designs for t-shirts. Out of the many, we selected seven to go with the continuing theme of the brand. It was hard. Choose your favorite on the poll online!

Today we have seven of his iconic designs exclusively here at alfalfa-seeds in limited edition. And what better way to make a start than with his ‘No Shit’ in Spencerian. The response has been tremendous so far and we cannot wait for them to be on sale. There will be more on the way so keep checking in.

The perfection, detail, patience (some impatience), and the graceful ‘ballet’ in his spencerian– all part of an enriching osmosis as I work with type under Tony’s guidance, will be embedded for life. And for that, I am ever grateful. Thank you Tony!
