We recently discover the intriguing work of Bohyun Yoon. The ingenious use of mirrors, shadows and his use of technology applied to the human body brings to mind some of the work of German artist Rebecca Horn. Out of his oeuvre, we selected four we thought you will enjoy. Here they are:

1. SHADOW. Wax, steel, wire, spotlight

Many wax body parts are used to cast sharp complete shadows using one light source. The artist says: “I wanted to depict an idea about a body controlled by some power, like a puppet.”

2. MIRROR COSTUME. Live model, plexglass mirror, brass, hinges, Velcro.

The artist uses mirrors to create both integration of reality and illusion. The body is extended, distorted and fragmented creating a chaotic image of the human body. Mr. Yoon uses the human body as a metaphor for the people in contemporary society.

3. MIRROR MASK. Mirror, brass, hinges.

This piece was created out of the need to communicate in English. When the artist first came to the US he couldn’t speak the language. He created Mirror Mask in order to closely observe people’s faces and gestures, which helped his understanding. He said: “where I questioned how we are universally able to communicate with our body regardless of race or language.”

4. REFORMING. 9 Channel video with sound.

Reforming was created out of curiosity. Trying to capture the shape and form of your body when receiving a massage with your eyes closed.
