Every now and then I go through and collect interesting quotes of interesting people. No, I don’t memorize them, although I do have a few favorites stored in my head. I like quotes because they’re like little peepholes to the psyche and spirit of the author.
I found Maria Popova, the brilliant editor of Brain Pickings–one of my favorite sources for fascinating and intellectual material–peeping into and extracting quotes from the famous diarist, Anaïs Nin(1903-1977). I’ve only read snippets of Nin’s diaries, but without a doubt, her writings are full of insight and wisdom. Maria then asked the terrific artist Lisa Congdon to illustrate a few of her favorite quotes, in the style of Lisa’s 365 Days of Hand Lettering.
And here they are. Simple, touching, and beautiful. I love the passages that Maria has selected; I love the way Lisa has translated them. I added another quote from Marcel Proust, for both the content and the rendition, also from the 365 Days of Hand Lettering.
