As someone who is always looking at fresh talent, I was immediately taken when I first saw the work of Jean-Paul Mallozzi. In going back and looking it over, I pondered of what is it that makes his pieces beautiful, seductive and a bit unsettling at once…Is it the subject matter? Is it his distinctive technique? Is it the surprising combination of immaculate craftsmanship with the explosive, almost violent yet careful use of color and the gestural lines?

The artist has said: “Moods and emotions have a color and vibration that manifests itself in the body. People can read emotion on a face and even more so in someone’s body language. I chose to combine the two ideas of energy and posture, but instead of a face, I replace it with color and gestural line work. It acts as a keyhole into how a person is feeling from within.”

Born and raised in Queens, NY, Mallozzi received a scholarship to attend the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he graduated with a B.F.A in Illustration. Widely published and exhibited, the young artist’s work has already been shown in New York, Washington D.C., Miami, and London. Earlier this year, he was the subject of a solo exhibition entitled kN0B0DY at the 101/Exhibit gallery in Miami’s design district (see video below).

Brine, his latest piece is currently on exhibit at the Miami Project fair during Art Basel Miami Dec 4 – Dec 9, Booth# 217.

I agree with an art critic who said “the right time to collect this young artist is now.” For updates on Jean-Paul’s visit his Facebook page.
