Spider Chrysanthemum

I think I’m going through a ‘flower phase.’ Flowers and botanical related objects have been drawing my attention for the past couple weeks.

This time, it was a book. There is a gallery/bookstore right next to Alfalfa Studio that I pass by everyday, and recently this book had appeared in the window.

The image on the cover was very attractive, and very real. Well, it is real in terms of imagery—it is a photograph. The creator, Andrew Zuckerman, is a well-known photographer and filmmaker, and whom the acclaimed designer Massimo Vignelli has praised as having an “uncompromising notion of space in which any object becomes its own essence.” After a couple days of just standing in front of the window, staring, I took a portion of my lunch break to go in the shop and explore the book. It was quite a big and heavy book, and as I opened the sturdy hardcover, I realized I had just opened the gate to a wondrous botanical garden of close-up creations, from the pink and pretty to the peculiar and perplexing. As I said about the cover, these flower photographs showed so much detail and true-to-life features that they actually looked like Realist paintings. I stroked the petals and smooth stems, and almost really felt them.

Zuckerman’s online garden is here.

Paphiopedilum Petula’s Magic

I’ve always seen the Paphiopedilum Petula’s Magic only in its state of bloom. I didn’t realize how enigmatic the previous stage would look. This one is my favorite.
