The End Was Here

I feel it has been a long time since I first heard that the “End of Times” would come, back in 1999. For some reason the year 2000 would—inevitably, according to some—damage all computers and bring the “Horses of Death” upon us, or something like that. We know now that all that was, well, kinda silly. More recently we had the Mayans’ prophecy, which I never really bothered to read about. Not because of lacking an incredibly morbid curiosity on how and when our entire planet will be destroyed, mind you, but because I knew that just like the year 2000 hype, it would only disappoint.
If there is anything to take away from all these crazy rants about the Apocalypse, it is this wonderful piece by Corn Studio. Located in Athens, Greece, the amazing people behind it drew inspiration from the increasingly annoying assumption of the end of times and created a beautiful calendar for 2013. My one peeve is that the symbols they use are, in fact, inspired by the Aztecs—which I find a bit weird because, if you are going to take inspiration from a Mayan prophecy, then why shouldn’t the Mayan visual system be the source as well? These two indigenous empires had similarities, yes, but they are two very different cultures. I would probably be annoyed by this a little more, if the calendar wasn’t so beautiful.
Each day in Corn Studio’s calendar has a symbol instead of a number so that, instead of counting down the days, we start to enjoy each day to its fullest and not worry so much about time running out.
You can look at some print tests in their Behance profile and, if you wish to buy one, you can pre-order now (It glows in the dark; c’mon guys, this is amazing!) I hope you also look at the rest of their work, and if you’re disappointed for the lack of Zombie apocalypse this year, don’t worry—I’m sure some new crazy prophecy will come our way to let us know when we will all inevitably die.
