Packages are not meant to be naked containers. They want to be looked at and are kicking each other’s arses to grab our attention. It’s a war! Imagine little boxes yelling: “Me! Me! Me!” … Well, that’s exactly what they do. Sadly, the bitter reality is that most of them don’t deserve one second of appreciation because of their ugly colours, bad typography, and distasteful photos.

How delighted was I on my last trip to France to see that French supermarket chain Monoprix had renewed their package design. It had gone from plain standard to super-fancy. Just so, all the boxes, cans and jars stood there as naturally as if they had always been so: no more photos, no more washed-out gradients, but single bright colours and big clean type. What a pleasant view! I took home a couple of boxes and added them to my collection. Pretty! The design was created by French agency Rosapark.

Let there be more Warholish jewels in the supermarkets of the world!

Unfortunately, it looks like they’ve gone back to adding pictures to their packages.
