Lightness vs heaviness; everyday vs extraordinary; simplicity vs complexity; these are some of the qualities that came to mind when I first saw The Identity Collection by Edinburgh, Scotland-based sculptor Alasdair Thomson.

Just like a fashion designer’s collection, Thomson’s includes dresses and blouses but unlike a fashion item, these will never be worn as they are made of Carrera Marble—the same material Michelangelo used to create his masterpiece David. The Collection explores “the way fabric hangs and folds, and is attempting to capture that lightness and gracefulness in stone.” The results are “simple and understated, as well as timeless and nostalgic.”

Something magical happens when one plays with our preconceived notions of reality. What is so remarkable about a plain and simple dress made of stone instead of fabric? I cannot really explain it and that’s the mysterious beauty of art.
