Few years ago, Applied Arts Magazine invited me to judge their annual design competition. In this trip to Toronto, I surveyed hundreds of pieces: posters, brand identities, packaging, books, and so on. Among the seemingly endless parade of entries there was one book that grabbed my attention, not precisely because of the design itself—although it was nicely done—but for the content instead. 2nd: The Face of Defeat, Photographs by Sandy Nicholson captures images of contestants soon after being awarded in their chosen fields. The images capture the entire gamut that conveys the anguish of almost winning; sadness, hopefulness, disappointment, surprise, anger, you name it.

It reminded me of all the times I’ve come in second, that one must accolade countless ‘seconds’ to achieve the ephemeral ‘first.’ Unfortunately, in our society everyone remembers winners: Michael Phelps, Kelly Clarkson, Usain Bolt, Nadia Comaneci…do you remember who came second after them?

Sandy Nicholson started shooting photo essays in the 1990s for Rolling Stone, Vogue and Australian magazines. Sandy’s photographs have exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London, the World Expo, Lisbon, Fotofeis in Scotland and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. His solo exhibitions, Lifts, Suburban Fetish and 2nd, have shown in Australia, the UK, Canada and Croatia. Sandy has won a World Press Photo, Applied Arts, Advertising and Directors Club of Canada and several other awards recognizing his photographic excellence.
