While researching for new icons that will be included in our updated NYC Iconic Map, I came across a symbolic mural painted by a quintessential New York artist, Keith Haring. As some of you may know, Harlem is an artistic neighborhood filled with museums, graffiti, and murals!!! One of these Harlem Murals was painted by Keith Haring and goes under the name of Crack Is Wack.

Crack Is Wack was painted on a handball court in the year of 1986. With no one’s permission, Keith decided to paint this mural with his signature style of thick black outlines, bright colors and cartoonish bodies. The main purpose was to send a powerful anti-Drug message to the community.

Crack is Wack
became a symbol of New York and is the best-surviving mural that Haring produced illegally. The small park where it is located was named after this mural and was restored and protected by the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation. If you would like to see it in person head out to 128 st and 2nd ave.
